We are looking for an artistic director/conductor who will build on Exultate’s history of musical excellence, propel the organization into a new phase with renewed artistic vision and energy, and sustain the choir’s culture of shared ownership, collaboration and mutual respect.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Strong artistic and musical leadership skills
A passion for and expertise in choral music, especially chamber choir repertoire
A leadership style that is communicative, connective and inspiring
A collegial attitude that respects and facilitates others’ contributions
Responsibilities
The role of artistic director is a part-time, contract position. The artistic director will be responsible for providing artistic leadership to Exultate, reporting to the board of directors. The specific role and responsibilities are to:
Articulate and promote an artistic vision for the choir, and establish and maintain high artistic standards
Develop and sustain a positive working relationship with the choir
Recruit and select new choir members and select guest artists
Plan and finalize season and concert programs in conjunction with the board
Prepare for and lead weekly rehearsals during the concert season
Prepare for and conduct four subscription-series concerts, plus one or two special performances (e.g., outreach events, special appearances, fundraising events, etc.) per season
Select music for purchase within the budget established by the board
Coordinate with and provide information to the part-time operations manager
Participate in audience, donor, funder and media relations strategies as developed by the board
Contribute to the development of the artistic components of the budget and grant applications
Attend meetings of the board at the board’s request

Screened candidates will be invited for an interview to be held on the evenings of either April 13, 20 or 27.
Shortlisted candidates will then be invited for an in-person audition with the choir on the evenings of either May 18 or 25. In order to be eligible, applicants must be available for a conducting audition on one of those two dates.

A letter outlining your interest and unique qualifications for the position, your vision for the choir, and how this role would fit with your personal goals.
A resumé.
A list of your commitments for the 2011-12 season.
A sample of two concerts that you would like to program for the choir and why you selected those themes and repertoire.
An audio or video recording of a performance that you conducted with a choir that you led for two or more seasons.
Starting Date
We would like the successful candidate to assume the role fully on June 1, 2011, and to conduct the 2011-2012 season. We are initiating the search now so that we can involve the successful candidate in the development of marketing materials, communications and grant applications in preparation for the 2011-12 season.
Compensation
Compensation will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
