Exultate is pleased to announce that Stephanie Martin is the winner of the 2008-2009 Choral Composition Competition! The competition, a biennial initiative of the Exultate Outreach Fund, contributes to the growth and development of choral music in Canada. This year's composer candidates were invited to submit a cappella choral works of three to six minutes in length, setting the text of Psalm 102:1 "Hear My Prayer". The submissions were adjudicated anonymously by John Tuttle and members of the choir, with a shortlist of three being considered by the choir as a whole. While all three finalists were strong entries, Professor Martin's work was the clear favourite.
"The choir responded very well to the piece," says John Tuttle, "I think it has a very clear form and good attention to 'musical grammar'."
Stephanie Martin's winning entry will be performed by the Exultate Chamber Singers on Friday, May 22nd, at 8:00 p.m. at St. Thomas's Church, 383 Huron Street, as part of a concert celebrating the music of Henry Purcell. Ms. Martin will be recognized at the concert and will be awarded the winning prize and a cheque for $1,000 from the Exultate Chamber Singers Outreach Fund.
Stephanie Martin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at York University, Director of Music at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, and Artistic Director of Pax Christi Chorale.
The Exultate Outreach Fund was established in 2002. The fund is one way that Exultate gives back to our community and supports our artistic goals. For information on contributing to the Outreach Fund, please contact Exultate at (416) 971-9229.
